Factors for RTW success:

1. An understanding of the insured’s policy and pre-disability occupation

Insured persons with retail policies are entitled to benefits if an illness or injury prevents them from working in their own occupation or pre-injury job. As such, facilitating a return to any other occupation may not be sufficient.

Generally, the insured’s pre-disability occupation guides and influences their post-recovery occupation choice.

2. An understanding of the member’s education, training and experience

The insured’s education, training and experience will, to a great extent, determine their vocational goals and potential. Advancing their skills with appropriate training programs can help increase employment potential and facilitate an early return to work.

3. Effective communication

Successful return-to-work coordination calls for regular communication between all stakeholders. This includes the insured, rehabilitation provider, insurer and the employer. It’s imperative that all parties are on the same page in their approach. All parties must take a proactive approach to keep everybody engaged and regularly updated on the progress of the RTW process.
