employee assistance program in the workplace

4 September 2026 posted by Recovery Partners

In Australia, 1 in 5 people aged 16-85 will experience a mental health condition in any given year (AIHW, 2025), and specifically employees can face a variety of personal and work-related challenges that may impact their wellbeing and performance on a day-to-day basis. A practical way for employers to support their employees through this is by offering confidential support from an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). This blog will discuss why it is important to offer an Employee Assistance Program in the workplace and the benefits it can provide to your organisation.

What is an EAP?

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a service offered to employees that provides free, confidential counselling conducted by a Mental Health Clinician (such as Registered Psychologists, Counsellors, Mental Health Nurses, Social Workers). EAP offers a variety of support types. At Recovery Partners, our experienced clinicians can assist you in clarifying and identifying problems and developing strategies to tackle these things. As well as this, they can provide coaching and strategies to assist in navigating work life and personal life. EAP can be accessed by all employees and is occasionally extended to their spouses, dependents and retirees. EAP is also a completely confidential service, no details from your session are disclosed to anyone within your workplace including management.

Benefits of Offering an EAP to Staff

1. Confidentiality

One of the main benefits of offering an Employee Assistance Program in the workplace is that it is a completely confidential service. Employers are not notified that employees have booked an appointment nor the reasons for booking. Discussions within a session are also kept private (unless under any special circumstances where there may be legal obligations or immediate risks to your safety and others). This demonstrates that an organisation values the wellbeing of its people, and helps to create a workplace where employees feel comfortable seeking support when they need it, without the fear of what they want to discuss being shared around.

2. Supports Employee Mental Health and Wellbeing

An Employee Assistance Program in the workplace gives employees access to short-term, solution-focused counselling whenever they need it. It can help employees manage stress, anxiety, relationship issues, grief and other challenges. It is a free, no-cost service to employees and can also be conducted in-person or via telehealth. Within a typical program, clinicians may include psychological assessments, mediation, critical incident response training and group interventions. These are tools that can assist with a variety of work or personal matters such as managing stress, improving relationships, and enhancing overall wellbeing.

3. Helps Employees Manage Workplace Stress

Workplace stress can affect an employee’s wellbeing, concentration and ability to perform their role effectively. An Employee Assistance Program in the workplace provides employees with access to confidential professional support to help them manage stress and navigate challenges they may be experiencing at work or at home. By giving employees a safe space to discuss their concerns and develop practical coping strategies, EAPs can help prevent workplace stress from escalating and support employees to maintain their wellbeing.

4. Improves Employee Engagement and Productivity

Emotional stress accounts for over 60% of time lost through absenteeism at work. Therefore, offering an Employee Assistance Program in the workplace can improve engagement and productivity. Employees who feel supported are more likely to feel engaged at work, as they know they have a support system they can rely on. Addressing personal challenges early can help employees remain focused and productive.

5. Provides Early Intervention and Support

EAP assists with early intervention support, ensuring workers are supported as soon as possible. It can give employees an accessible support option before issues become more significant. As well as this, EAP can complement broader workplace wellbeing and mental health initiatives, for example in Mental Health Support training, ensuring all employers and employees are aware of the service and it’s benefits in preventing psychological injuries from becoming more significant.

How to Encourage Staff to Use an EAP

It’s one thing to implement an Employee Assistance Program in the workplace, but how do you ensure that your staff know about it? It is important to communicate what EAP offers and who can access it, this can be done by creating and displaying some informative posters with contact information and the process. Also, regularly reminding staff that the service is available to them at any time and reassure that it is totally confidential. Workplaces can also include EAP information as part of their onboarding and wellbeing initiatives, ensuring all new staff are aware of the service and remind existing staff.
