return to work NT

11 September 2025 posted by Recovery Partners

In this blog, we will look at how one of our consultants here at Recovery Partners enabled a client’s successful return to work in NT, through clear communication and support.

About The Client

This client is a 45-year-old male who sustained a thoracic back strain in January 2025 at work. He was certified unfit for work for 2 weeks and then received medical clearance to return to work in NT on suitable duties.

One of the client’s biggest concerns throughout this time was that his employer would not support him in gradual RTW on suitable duties and make the worker do something they are not medically cleared to do. To address these concerns moving forward, the client put in place a structured plan of action. He planned to request a functional update from his treating Physiotherapist, develop a Recover at Work Plan, and arrange a meeting with his Employer to discuss this further. During this client’s time with Recovery Partners, he valued our consultant’s efficiency, care and support through this difficult time.

About Us/Our Involvement

Recovery Partners arranged a meeting with the Employer immediately after this concern was raised by the worker. Recovery Partners brought a draft Recover at Work Plan that outlined worker’s restrictions from the GP as well as the Treating Physiotherapist, so this was clearly articulated to the Employer. We also reminded the Employer of their obligations to facilitate worker’s safe return to work, and how important this was with return to work in NT. During this time, we allowed the Employer to speak freely about any concerns they had about the worker’s return to work journey. This was pivotal as the Employer felt heard and not misunderstood. Finally, the outcomes from the meeting were then debriefed with the worker so that all parties were on the same page.

The Result

The worker commenced return to work on suitable duties 1 week after Recovery Partners came aboard. The worker was then able to return to full duties within 2 months. The key takeaways and achievements from this was an early return to work and a durable return to work.

What Makes this Case Unique?

Most Employers are usually supportive of a worker’s return to work. In this case, they were not well informed, hesitant and the worker had perceived this as a lack of support. If these things were not addressed, this could have drastically affected the outcome.

At Recovery Partners, we know that every worker, every employer, every key stakeholder we come across needs to be heard and valued when going through return-to-work in NT. To be able to do this consistently takes effort and something we strive for, always.
