In this blog, we share how one of our consultants supported a client in the Northern Territory to overcome the challenges of remote worker rehabilitation and accessing the right treatment to achieve a safe and timely recovery.
About the Client
In January 2025, a worker sustained an injury to their left elbow and was referred to our team in Recovery Partners in early February 2025. As they were living in a remote location approximately 2.5 hrs away from Darwin, our client’s biggest concern was how they were going to access appropriate treatment given their distance from major medical facilities.
Our consultant Siva developed a plan in consultation with the client including:
- Contacting the local medical centre to confirm where the GP from Darwin flies in for visits.
- Engage with a Darwin-based physiotherapist who specialised in elbow injuries to explore telehealth options.
The client emphasised that what they valued most with us during our time working with them was Siva’s consistent follow through and that she delivered on everything she promised.
Our Involvement
Recovery Partners involvement with this client included:
- Contacting the local medical centre and discovering that the Darwin-based GP flies in every Thursday.
- Arranging for the worker to be booked in for regular reviews and certificate updates.
- Facilitating medical case conferences remotely, ensuring the worker, GP and allied health professionals remained connected.
- Calling multiple providers in Darwin and securing services from a physio that specialises in elbow injuries. They confirmed telehealth support an offered an exercise platform app so the worker could perform the prescribed exercises independently between sessions.
The Result
Due to the treatment access and coordination that was facilitated by Recovery Partners, the worker maintained their capacity and was able to remain at work under light duties while undergoing rehabilitation. Through functional updates from the treating physiotherapist, and active participation in case conferences, capacity upgrades were achieved. Within 12 weeks, the worker was cleared for full duties.
Key Achievements
- Early access to treatment despite the worker’s remote location.
- Improved communication among all parties and overcoming the logistical challenges of the client’s location.
- A timely and sustainable return to full duties within 12 weeks.
What Makes this Case Unique
What makes this specific case unique, is the distance barrier that the client faced and that the GP available locally was a FIFO (fly-in fly-out) Doctor. However, by utilising telehealth, remote coordination and regular scheduling allowed us to overcome this barrier and deliver a positive outcome.
