Certification is highly regarded as a solid demonstration of best practice and reflects a robust safety system. Key benefits of a fully implemented safety system include;

  • Potential reduction in the number of accidents
  • Demonstration of legal and regulatory compliance
  • Demonstration to stakeholders of your commitment to health and safety
  • Demonstration of an innovative and forward-thinking approach
  • Increased access to new customers and business partners
  • Better management of health and safety risks now and in the future
  • Potential reduced insurance costs (public liability and workers compensation)

The diagram below demonstrates the continual improvement basis on which results can be achieved.

The goal of both standards to prevent injury and illness in the workplace. Both standards are also applicable to all industries.

The difference between AS/NZS 4801 and OHSAS 18001 is:
  • OHSAS 18001 is internationally recognised.
  • OHSAS 18001 is more closely aligned to other standards, including Quality.
  • Certification to OHSAS 18001 includes certification to AS/NZS 4801.
  • OHSAS 18001 certification requires minimal additional time and costs compared to AS/NZS 4801 certification.
Which Standard is right for you?

Typically, companies solely operating in Australia without any other certifications elect to pursue AS/NZS 4801. Organisations that operate internationally or maintain Quality and or Environmental certification elect OHSAS 18001.
