Implementing an Occupational Health & Safety Management System and having it certified can be quite a challenge especially when you consider the many requirements of the ISO 45001 standard. To help you out, we’ve outlined the steps you need to take.
Steps to ISO 45001 Certification:
Learn the requirements
To implement the system, you need to understand the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard and its applicability and alignment with your organisation. It’s only when you learn the standard that you can understand what is required of your organisation.
Perform a gap analysis and initial OHSMS review and identify hazards, assess risks and determine controls. At this point, you should also establish your system’s safety objectives and goals. The gap analysis will allow you to determine the changes you need to make to your existing system.
Design the necessary procedures and redesign your processes to align with the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard. Once you have modified or developed processes to meet the standard, you will need to control those processes. Document the new OHS management system and create a plan and train employees on the system.
Once your system is developed and documented, the organisation should follow the set procedures and continually make improvements to the system. Your WHS consultant should be able to help you with any query or request you may have to assist you with implementing the system in your company.
Before certification, an internal audit of the system is required. The internal audit will be conducted by your consultant to see how your system is working and how you can improve it. You can follow the internal audit with the management review to prepare for the certification audit.
Finally, select a certification body and they will come and perform your certification audit. The auditors will review your OHS Management System top ensure conformance to the ISO 45001. If they find some areas that do not meet the requirements, the system won’t be certified.
