The transportation of goods plays a major role in Australia’s national activities. However, this is not without predisposing workers to a hoard of injuries. Among the most common is the shoulder injury. Caused by the constant vibration of vehicles and the repetitive nature of the job, the injury can greatly affect the performance of workers.
Usually, most of the injuries are sustained while handling goods manually or manipulating moving parts of the truck, trailer or containers . The loading and unloading process can cause sprains and strains to the shoulder. While most of the injuries are minor, some can be serious and disabling and in some cases, fatal. This makes it imperative for players in the industry to put in measures with the aim of minimising such risks.
Prevention is better than cure and by making sure that work is safe and efficient, an organisation can improve productivity. The preventive measures include;
1. Use of appropriate and well-designed equipment
The purchase of appropriately designed equipment not only reduces the risk of injuries but also it provides a more efficient way of performing strenuous tasks. A poor design, on the other hand, can only lead to an increase in the incidence of injuries.
2. Use of adjustable seat
A quality seat with adjustable height, position and lumbar support is good especially for truck drivers.
3. Cabin access
Getting in and out of the cabin should be made as easy and safe as possible. Well, fitted steps and hand holds can help minimise the risk of falling.
4. Safe loading and unloading
The process should be streamlined to ensure the injury rates are at a low. One way to achieve that is by improving the access to the tray and cargo area. Bad steps can be dangerous especially when carrying a load. Again, the need to jump off or climb on should be eliminated.
