Psychological Early Intervention Assessment
Psychological Early Intervention Assessments assist organisations to prevent and mitigate the escalating costs of psychological claims. Mental health and psychological conditions that are left untreated can cost Australian workplaces approximately $10.9 billion per year. It is important to intervene early to support employee wellbeing, reduce the risk of long-term absence and prevent the progression of psychological injuries into complex and costly claims.
Psychological Claims
According to Safe Work Australia’s Snapshot: Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace:
- Psychological claims are the largest growing cohort of claims (9% or 11,700 of all serious claims).
- The cost of psychological claims is considerably higher in comparison to other injuries and diseases, with the median compensation paid for mental health conditions totalling $58,615 compared to $15,743 for all injuries and diseases.
- Psychological claims have an extremely long duration and have a lower RTW rate than other injuries (79.1% RTW in comparison to 91.6% for all injuries).
Additionally, the State of Workplace Mental Health in Australia report reveals that claims for mental health and psychological conditions that are left untreated can cost Australian workplaces approximately $10.9 billion per year.
Process
Psychometric Assessments
There will be two assessments administered during the Psychological Early Intervention Assessment:
- WHODAS 2: World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Scale.
- DASS-21 (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale).
Short Clinical Interview
Once the employee has completed the required assessments, a clinical interview will be undertaken. During this interview, the following areas will be assessed:
- Mental Health History.
- Other Medical Conditions.
- Treatment History.
- Initial Triggers or Identifiers.
- Current Medical Status.
- Risk Assessment.
- Support System.
Results Interpretation
All findings from the clinical interview and psychometric assessment will be thoroughly analysed and interpreted to provide a clear understanding of the employee’s mental health status. Explanation of the employee’s scores are in comparison to normative data for others in comparable roles. Summary of Self-Help Tips discussion relevant to the employee’s results, including whether they may benefit from accessing further support from a healthcare professional.
Report Completion
A detailed report, including all assessment findings and recommendations, will be completed within 48 hours of the interview and shared with the relevant parties. The report will include:
- Recover at work considerations.
- Suggested medical case conference agenda items (if applicable).
- Suggested early intervention / treatment considerations.
- Suitability of further Workplace Rehabilitation.
- Suggested organisational considerations.
