A safety culture is a broad, organisation-wide approach to safety management. It results from combined individual and group efforts toward values, attitudes, goals, and proficiency of an organisation’s health and safety program. 

It is important to develop a strategy to ensure effective communication and engagement with all stakeholders within your organisation, from the employees and supervisors to the top-level management.

Workplace safety should be an intrinsic part and not a separate add-on to an organisation’s operations and culture.

Creating an effective safety culture is an ongoing process and is a large commitment on behalf of the entire company. The following can help you create and nurture a safety culture:

All stakeholders should share the same safety vision, goals and objectives.

Enforcing accountability

This should be done in each level within your organisation. Define each individual’s safety responsibilities and hold everyone accountable, especially the managers and supervisors.

Training all stakeholders

Safety information should be offered for all involved. Employees need to be educated on the importance of reporting their concerns and injuries and near misses.

Build trust

Aim to maintain a blame-free work environment. This will help foster corporation and trust between the workers and the management.

There is no better way to keep everyone motivated.
